It’s a little hard to discuss this novel without giving stuff away, but I will say that the book does a good job of subverting expectations. It is revealed that Vanessa's therapist is Richard's other ex wife, who he threw down a flight of stairs. This part of the novel demonstrates how much Vanessa changed while she was married to Richard. Physical/Emotional abuse. Mrs. Porter: Jonah Porter's mother. She says she is also going to tell Emma how he is tracking her using her phone. To me the Maureen angle would have been far more interesting than a simple controlling husband. Part two starts with what happened between Vanessa and Richard. The authors needed to title each chapter for which woman was the star of that chapter since the dates and years went back and forth.

The Prologue is Vanessa speaking about Emma- the heart shaped face and the woman her husband left her for. As you read the book, there are mixed emotions, some of which Nelly hated to give Richard up mixed with the fact she wanted out of that marriage and she knew Richard would not allow her to leave/divorce him. Error rating book. Vanessa kicks at him and claws at Richard until she grabs something hard in his pocket. Flash-forward, Richard is in a psych ward. And she respected Vanessa for both telling her the truth about trying to get them together and about trying to save her from him. Emma remembered Vanessa’s role in the breakup of her parents’ marriage and had made it her goal to destroy Vanessa’s marriage. It was only after Vanessa made her escape from Richard that she realized she had doomed another woman to the same fate she had suffered. Maggie’s brother Jason threatened to never allow Vanessa to forget what had happened to his sister. Richard started gas-lighting and abusing Vanessa, cutting her off from friends and family. When Maureen put on the wedding rings it freaked me out. A book that after reading it twice is still confusing is NOT a well written book. I’ve mentioned it a few times on the blog though, so it seems like I should just write out my thoughts.
Emma apologizes to Vanessa for assuming she had been the one to encourage the affair. I kept back-tracking because I felt like I had missed a detail and it just became tiresome! Honestly, I don’t think the plot twists are that novel (so perhaps you will think they’re cheesy) but there’s just so many of them that makes it kind of interesting, if that makes sense. Ultimately, this book is mainly good for people who like guessing upcoming plot twists (this is probably why I enjoyed reading this), since that’s probably the best of what this book has to offer. I think that it is a good edition to the thriller genre right after Gone Girl. :).

As the book is getting closer to the climax you are stupefied as it is reveled that the entire time you’ve been reading Vanessa trailing after her replacement to find out that Nellie’s point of view is actually Vanessa’s from when she’d first met Richard, her now ex-husband. Period. just closed the book and i am frustrated. Endless boring dialogue. The only thing that cleared up some confusion for me was the fact there were 2 writers and each was trying to be a single writer so repeated so much yet it seemed different because a different writer was telling same story.
