Shortly past Dick Lake, we came to the Ministry sign, informing us to stay off the fire tower which we could just begin to make out through the trees. It took a bit of a detour as we made our way to the bottom of the gorge, and along the bottom, which finally exited into a flat area, close to the ATV trail we were following our GPS to.We finally arrived at the Sturgeon at 2am, got ferried across by friends on ATV's who had been waiting for us all night. In my mind, the southern summit would be a difficult bushwhack with no views, and coupled with the heat of the day and the previous days excursion, the prospect was becoming less and less attractive. IMPORTANT NOTE: There is no motorized vehicle access beyond the crossing of the Sturgeon River. It was a surreal moment, 6 of us hanging out in the middle of nowhere, in the middle of the night. This time of the year there were still a lot bugs. So after what seemed an eternity of bushwhacking for a whole 250 m of gain, we decided that we had found the other height of land. Great time of year (only a few bugs )for a hike. It was starting to get hot and I was getting anxious to set off to the northern peak. Made it most of the way to the base of the ridge. Smoothwater was rough for us as well, especially southbound. From Scarecrow Lake it is a 4.0 km trek to the summit. Makes the trail in harder then needed. From the Kirsch campsite, proceed to the south tip of Smoothwater, where there will be a portage and a nearby creek.
