You might trim off some dead flowers, but they're going to keep opening new buds, so I don't think like a tulip or a lily you have to cut that on the day it is ready and that's just not the case with lisianthus. So, this is a really great time to remember to order your plugs. But use those groups 3 and 4 because they won't respond to that long day length as quickly as the groups 1 and 2. You might be great withthem. Large seeds tend to produce plants that grow quickly (think of sunflowers or pumpkins) whereas tiny seeds tend to need a long time to build up strength. Now those of us who have been growing way up north in Vermont, and you know, Minnesota, the Northern Tier, you can transplant as late as July, and then you'll have blooms in October. Zinnias maybe not, but Lisianthus, use a clean tray. You're going to pay for soil and your greenhouse space now. Ask around - other people in your own area if you can maybe combine your orders together. Especially for this crop. Use a heat matt to provide some bottom heat. Lisianthus seed is one of the tiniest of all commercial cut flowers. Even if you think you've got enough rain,water again. All Lisianthus will initially produce one bud, followed by side branches that make many more buds. It is always better to slide it up before the plant needs to be supported, and it is a real pain to move netting up after plants are already leaning. So cut them, cut them hard. This is part of why Lisianthus is notoriously slow to grow. Lisianthus is tolerant of frost when it is young, and will be fine with temperatures down to 20F, assuming it is planted in the ground.
