Weather Report Japan Tour 1983 Poster. Joe Zawinul performs as part of the Hong Kong Arts Festival on February 20 and 21. Memorable artists like Django Reinhardt, Oscar Peterson, Antonio Carlos Jobim and John McLaughlin were all foreigners that were greatly influenced by the American players - but at the same time brought their own cultural contexts to bare on the music - offering new sounds and approaches to playing jazz. Joe only lived another 3 months after the Lugano concert, but he kept touring almost until the end. Weather Report enjoyed both commercial and critical success, incorporating influences from jazz fusion to rock to big band as well as Afro-Cuban and Brazilian music. The pair only crossed paths briefly, with Wayne getting hired by Art Blakey soon after and Zawinul going on to tour with Dinah Washington and record with Ben Webster. This album really demonstrated his depth as a composer, yet the music around him was rapidly shifting away from jazz's bebop roots towards a more rock-influenced sound. Perhaps as significant was Zawinul's inclusion in the outfit - a white Austrian keyboard player deeply imbedded in a band that was heavily influenced by African American gospel traditions and the blues.
